Your state. Your compliance roadmap.
Iowa requires every public school tested by the end of 2027. Colorado follows a 5-year cycle. Illinois and Pennsylvania have pending legislation.
Iowa Code § 280.32
Every single public school attendance center must complete its initial radon test by July 1, 2027. Follow-up testing is legally mandated at least once every 5 years thereafter. Results must be published transparently on the district's website.
View sourceStrict Periodic Retesting Mandates (The 5-Year Clock)
Districts in these states are legally required to test on a recurring multi-year cycle. Passive charcoal testing here introduces a severe risk of high, blended "blind averages" that mandate unneeded structural remediation.
One-Time or Structural-Trigger Mandates
These states require testing but contain legal "loopholes" or finite deadlines. Because testing is often triggered by specific building milestones, accurate baseline readings are crucial to avoid permanent, costly compliance flags.
"Reporting Only" or Locally Conditioned Mandates
These states establish complex infrastructure frameworks. Testing is often mandated on paper but tied to shifting local funding pools or specific state agency reporting policies.
Proposed Legislation (Not Yet Law)
School radon testing bills have been introduced in these states but have not been enacted. Districts can adopt testing on their own schedule now, so a new law would not catch them unprepared.
